140 I replied on 22 July to your letter of 8 July to David Ennals,
with which you sent correspondence from Mr M P Tracy of Hastings and Company, Marine House, First Floor, 15/19 Queen's Road, Central Hong Kong (a copy of which I enclose). Mr Tracy was concerned about the case of Mr Li Kit, one of the 119 South Vietnamese illegal immigrants who were detained in Hong Kong.
The Governor has now told us that Mr Li was known to have left a wife and seven children in Saigon and that there were no grounds for allowing him to remain in Hong Kong.
The only member of the group who was allowed to stay was Ir Chan Krok-kei, who claimed to he been born in Hong Kong. You will be glad to know that, before theother 118 members were returned to Vietnam the Hong Kong Government made individual investigations into the case of each member of the group. Twenty-one Cuestions were asked and the answere were recorded by the Marine Police. The questions included:
(a) Name
(b) Language spoken
(c) Place and date of birth
(d) Family background (names, ages and addresses of relatives. (e) Particular details of any relatives living in Hong Kong (f) Occupation/salary etc for the past four years
(a) Reason for leaving Vietnam
(h) Documents held (whatever type).
