I replied on 9 July to your letter of 26 June to David Ennals, with which you sent

correspondence from Mr M P Tracy of Hastings and Company, Marine House, First Floor, 15/19 Queen's Road, Central Hong Kong (a copy of which I enclose). Mr Tracy was concerned about the case

of Mr Li Kit, one of the 119 South Vietnamese

illegal immigrants who were detained in Hong

Kong.

The Governor has now told us that Mr Li

was known to have left a wife and seven children

in Saigon and that there were no grounds for allowing him to remain in Hong Kong.

The only member of the group who was allowed to stay was Mr Chan Kwok-kei, who claimed

to have been born in Hong Kong. You will be glad to know that, before the other 118 members were returned to Vietnam the Hong Kong Government made

individual investigations into the case of each

member of the group. Twenty-one questions were

asked and the answers were recorded by the Marine

Police. The questions included:
