Dear Mr.Collard,
134
Thank you for your letter of 2nd September, concerning the South Vietnamese who were returned to Saigon on the night of 16/17 June. V1 are glad that the British Embassy in Saigon is taking a particular interest in this matter, and is in direct contact with your department.
You mention in your letter that the British Dubassy has been "given details of these individuals who appeared to us, on the initial interrogation, to have some marginal claim to enter Hong Kong legally...." This is the first indication which has come to our attention that members of this group were attended to on an individual basis. We would be mest grateful if you could provide us with further details of these individuals, espocially the names of those interrogated by your department. You will, I am sure, appreciate that Amnesty International is very anxious to ensure that these people are being fairly treated in detention, and that they receive a fair trial.
An Amnesty representative who visited Saigon recently with a view to meeting thosemembers of the group detained awaiting trial was informed that the British Embassy had in fact received no list of names against which to conduct even the most basic preliminary enquiries. Wo are naturally delighted to know that dotails are available concerning at least some of them, and would be most grateful if you would kindly assist Amnesty in its enquirios by releasing those names which you have.
Yours sincerely,
Chess.
