The Guardian article of 7 August alleges that at least 14 of the South Vietnamese sent back
from Hong Kong have died. This is totally untrue. They are all alive and well. They have not been ill-treated in any way.

The South Vietnamese Government has said that
violation of the emigration laws is not expected to attract any exceptional punishment.

The Guardian article also states that draft . dodgers are reported to have been sent without training to a front line posting. This too is entirely untrue. After their trial it is expected that they will be sent for military training and then
assigned to a normal posting in the normal way.

The main concern of the South Vietnamese
Government is with the racketeers who organise this illegal smuggling out of the country. This traffic for profit, which causes so much suffering and disruption, must be brought to an end.
