Many thanks for your letter CR 22/2091/74 of/30 July.
I was very glad to have this expression of Hong Kong views. I was also, incidentally, very glad to see that a classified letter can get here reasonably quickly, although I suppose it goes via London.
2. As I write we have a brief visit from Mr Sanguinetti representing Amnesty International - he is, I expect, known to you.
He has been very straightforward here, presenting his credentials to the Ministry of Information and also informing them that the object of his visit is if possible to visit some of the prisoners. It remains to be seen if he succeeds. I told him, inter alia, that the British Embassy would certainly be observing the trial or trials when they took place and Sanguinetti asked me how anyone would know that the people produced in dock were actually the same people as had been returned from Hong Kong. could make various comments on that question but it does remind me that we have never had a list of the 118: perhaps you could send me one? Some of them I think you may have a record of only with false names and if this is so perhaps you could indicate.
