EXTRADITION: HONG KONG/PAKISTAN

1.

The Fugitive Offenders Act (which governs extradition between Commonwealth countries) ceased to apply to Pakistan from the date on which Pakistan left the Commonwealth. There are, therefore, no extradition arrangements between Hong Kong and Pakistan.

2. We have asked the authorities in Pakistan if they would wish to negotiate an extradition treaty (which would be extended to cover Hong Kong). We are awaiting their reply. The Colonial Secretariat in Hong Kong has been kept in the picture.

3. If it were decided to deport the two accused you may wish to know that in English law deportation must be to the country of the deportee's choice - always assuming that that country will accept the deportee.
