Sir Murray MacLehose Mr S T Kidd, Hong Kong

Commissioner

Mr B H Dinwiddy

Illegal Immigration from South Vietnam and Other Third Countri 29.

It had just been confirmed that one of the 118 South Vietnamese recently returned to Vietnam had previously been uri. and sentenced to death on smuggling charges. He was to be reum and would be liable to severe punishment though, almost certainly, not a death sentence. Sir Murray MacLehose observed that the South Vietnamese authorities had qualified their assurances by saying that smugglers would be liable for punishment. M person concerned had given a false name in Hong Kong and Lord Gorony- Roberts thought that HMG could reply reasonably to any criticism
