An appointment is for a period of resident service as stated in the paper of particulars of the post and/or in the letter of offering the appointment or, in the case of re-engagement, offering the further employment, plus earned vacation leave.
Resident service for the purpose of the term of agreement, period of probation and tour of duty will count from the date of the officer's arrival in Hong Kong or assumption of duty if appointed locally.
The appointment will cease, in the case of an officer appointed on agreement, on the date of expiry of any leave granted in respect of his tour of resident service.
If in the case of an officer on agreement, the tour of resident service provided for by his previous agreement was reduced but full passages were provided, the subsequent tour of resident service shall be extended by a period of equivalent to the period by which the previous tour was reduced.
GENERAL CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

(iv)
The duties of the officer include the usual duties of the office in which he is engaged, and any other duties which his Head of Department or the Colonial Secretary may call upon him to perform. Such duties may include the training and instruction of other officers. Officers may be required before taking up their appointments or at any time during their service to attend prescribed courses of instruction.
The working week for the officer is normally 54 days, the normal hours of work being from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday with one hour for lunch and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to Sundays there are approximately 17 gazetted public holidays in a year.
The officer shall not, either directly or indirectly, engage or be concerned in any other service or business whatsoever or receive commissions or profits of any kind, but shall devote the whole of his time and attention to the service of the Government, and shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interest of the Government.
The officer is subject to the Orders and Regulations of the Government and to Departmental Instructions for the time being in force; to any special Ordinances or Regulations (whether administrative or statutory) which apply to the office or to the Department to which he is appointed and to Colonial Regulations.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT AND INCREMENTAL DATE
(1)
The date of first appointment is normally the date upon which the officer leaves the country of engagement for Hong Kong, provided that he travels by air and proceeds by the most direct route. If he breaks his journey or travels by an indirect route or by sea, the extra travelling time is deducted before determining his date of appointment. In the case of an officer appointed locally the date of first appointment is the date upon which he assumes duty in Hong Kong.
