I think I should inform you that Commander Morrison spoke to me on the telephone yesterday about this officer.

I see from my records that I examined him on 23.8.1973 for 3 months secondment to Tunisia, and that I examined him for this present secondment to Hong Kong on 22.7.1974.

These examinations were of course mainly physical including blood pressure,

chest Xray and urine examination, but in addition to the declaration which the applicant fills in about any past illnesses I specifically ask them if they have ever had any nervous or mental trouble. Also I asked Mr Howell how he had got on in Tunisia and whether he expected any difficulty in Hong Kong!

This I think answers question 3B.

As regards question 3A, I gather Mr Howell went out a month after I saw him and was all right then but broke down after about a week in Hong Kong. I also find this difficult to understand. In a man who had had no previous history the only reasonable explanation would be some infection like influenza.

Incidentally, I would be most grateful for any information you get from St. Thomas's Hospital where I believe he has been treated.

Yours sincerely
