PROPOSED DRAFT LETTER TO SUPERINTENDENT IRVINE

On

...

October Mr Godber's solicitors sent us a letter

enquiring about the circumstances in which Mr Hunt had agreed to give evidence against Mr Godber. Counsel for the prosecution were subsequently informed that Mr Godber's solicitors were prompted to write this letter because they had received certain information of which you were alleged to be the source.

We do not know what importance, if any, the defence attach to your allegedly being the source of information. We are however instructed by the Hong Kong Government to ask you whether in fact you have had some contact with a person or persons connected with the defence that may have given rise to this allegation.

If so, we are instructed to ask you to send to us in writing an account of what occurred, giving the name of any other person involved and the time and place. Should any conversation concerning the giving of evidence by

have taken place, we are instructed

to ask that your account should include full details of that conversation according to the best of your recollection.

We understand that you may shortly be returning to Hong Kong and would therefore ask for your early reply.
