You may be aware that on 30 October Mr Silkin, the Attorney-General, had a conversation with Mr Scrivener, after which the Attorney spoke to Mr French over the telephone. Attorney apprised Mr French of the fact that Lester & Co were prompted to write to you about the circumstances in which Mr Hunt had agreed to give evidence against Mr Godber because they had received certain information of which Superintendent Irvine was alleged to be the source.
The Hong Kong Government has now proposed that you should make an approach to Supt. Irvine by writing a letter to him on the lines of the enclosed draft.

You may therefore wish to consult Mr French in order to

his views on whether there would be any advantage in, or objection to, making an approach to Supt. Irvine in order to ascertain the circumstances giving rise to the allegation that he was the source of information which led Lester & Co to write to you about
and
if Mr French sees no objection to the making of such an approach to Supt. Irvine, his views on the suitability of the enclosed draft letter.
The Hong Kong Government has further suggested that, if you do make an approach to Supt. Irvine on the lines they have proposed, you should first inform Lester & Co of the course you intend to take, and you may care to mention this suggestion to Mr French.
