F. DECEASED LAU Wah

Madam CHENG Yung aged 47 of Chu Shing Mansion, 30/F, Block C, Flat 2, proprietor of Sin Cheung Apartment,” said she knew Lau Wah for 6 years and employed the Deceased as manager for $1,500 - $2,000 p.n. Lau Wah was hard-working.

Lau was widower without children. She was of the opinion that the Deceased was not acquainted with the Prisoner before.

Mr. Chan Kwok-keung, aged 30, of 123-125 Leighton Road, 5/F, Hong Kong, sworn brother of the Deceased, said that he knew the Deceased for 15 years. He found the Deceased bore no grudge with anyone, and confirmed that the Deceased and the Prisoner were not known to each other.

G. INTERVIEW WITH THE PRISONER

The Prisoner was first very tense during the interview but he could keep calm, gradually, when he was visited in the Stanley Prisen on 22nd March, 1974.

He considered himself as a person who could easily be influenced by others. He claimed that as a matter of fact, he did not know the victim beforehand. He regretted that he took part in a gang-fight which ended up in a big mess. He hoped that his family members, especially the elder brother who suffered from meningitis, could be rendered adequate assistance. He wanted to start all over again if there was a chance given him.

H. ACTION TAKEN

The Prisoner's family has applied for public assistance to the Shek Loi Social Security Field Unit, Social Welfare Department. Their case was now under investigation. (Case No. S.L. 2133).

I. SUMMING UP

As the Prisoner admitted himself being a person easily led by others, his weak personality was related to the low standard of education he had received during his formative years and perhaps to some extent to the non-support he got from his parents who were afflicted with chronic illness and consequently plunged into finan- cial hardship. He was kind to his parents but took the wrong chance of working in gambling stall, rendering himself in contact with undesirable associates for which he regretted later, but too late. Being poor, he could not resist the temptations of high paid illegal job in which he was engaged as regular employee. This outlook to stave off temptation was not easy to cultivate for his age and circumstances without personal insight through education.
