refused, and this led to the present unfortunate incident. Miss LUI also revealed that the Deceased though associated with some illegal 14-K triad members had not yet actually joined its membership.

The Deceased's mother, formerly supported by the Deceased, had been assisted with public assistance from Social Welfare Department at $146 per month commencing on 8.3.1974 for a period of four months, subject to review.

F. PERSONS CONTACTED (relevant to the Prisoner's conduct

and behaviour)

1. LAI Fuk yiu (father of the Prisoner)

The Prisoner's father admitted that he knew little about the Prisoner's behaviour in town in the recent few years as he had stayed in Chung Chau Island until last October. Nevertheless, he said that the Prisoner was a filial son and visited him in Cheung Chau Island and gave him pocket money regularly. The Prisoner was also said to be a hard-working and submissive person. He was not aware of any matter concerning the Prisoner's undesirable association.

2. SHUM Kwai-fong (Mother of the Prisoner)

The Prisoner was said to be a filial and a good provider. He was moderate in temper. He possessed no evil hobbies and seldom kept late hours. However, his outside beha- viour was beyond her knowledge. She stressed that his absence from home means a great loss to her.

3. LAI May-foon, aged 16 (Younger sister of the Prisoner)

The Prisoner was said to be a kind and responsible brother except that he always put to her all the household chores. The Prisoner had aŭmitted to mer that it was improper to work at the gambling den and that he had realized his association with undesirable characters at his work place and he treated this as a temporary job only. She regretted that he had not quitted the job before it was too late.

4. SHUM Kow-hing, M/44 (maternal uncle of the Prisoner, living

at No. 1116, Block 25, Sau Mou Ping Estate, Kowloon)

The Prisoner was a filial and obedient son and was respectful to him, He believed that the Prisoner might have turned astray about two years ago when he was seen to keep long hair. The Prisoner was said to be a young man with high expecta- tions. He was always willing and eager to help his friends and his good nature was exploited by his undesirable associates. His father had stayed in Cheung Chau for most of his time and his mother had been occupied by her restaurant work, thus rendering him insufficient supervision and control.
