the prisoner appeared very frightened and excited, these officers had difficulty in understanding what the prisoner said, but the sergeant gave evidence that at his home the prisoner pointed to an iron stool and said that he had hit his wife with it which had

caused her to lose consciousness.

The prisoner was then taken to Shau Kei Wan Police Station where he was interviewed by Senior Inspector TANG Nai-chu through a sergeant who was a native of Chiu Chow and who acted

as interpreter between the Senior Inspector and the prisoner. As a result of this interview and after having been cautioned that he was not obliged to say anything unless he wished to do so, but that whatever he said would be taken down in writing and might be given in evidence, the prisoner voluntarily gave an oral statement which the sergeant interpreted to the Senior Inspector who wrote down what the sergeant had interpreted in his notebook. After this procedure was completed, the sergeant read back in the Chiu Chow dialect to the prisoner what the Senior Inspector had written in his notebook and the prisoner agreed that the contents were correct. The words he actually used were that the contents were all right.

In his statement the prisoner said that Madam CHEUNG Shui-fa was his wife and that they had been living together with their family at his home in the Chai Wan Resettlement Estate. He said that recently his wife had said that she wanted to obtain a divorce from him and that a few days ago they went to the City District Office to see the City District Officer who told them to separate next week. He said that on this morning of the 4th of April, his wife told him to move all his clothing and his ancestral tablet and the censer. The prisoner then said that he would move his clothing but that he would not move his ancestral tablet until the time when he returned from sea (evidence was later given by the prisoner that he was due to go to Japan to join a ship there to sail back in it as a cook to Hong Kong).
