The Prisoner came from a well-off family at his native place.

Like many of other rich persons, he started the smoking of opium at the

age of eighteen as culturally smoking of opium at that time was considered

as a custom or a fashion reflecting one's economic status.

Re came to liong Kong at the age of twenty-four leaving behind

his relatives in China. At first, he was introduced by his clansman,

Mr. LIU Chung, to settle down at a farm in Fanling, the New Territories.

He lived there helping in farming and fish-culturing work for about four

years. He was given no fixed salary but an amount of pocket money

sufficient to cover his daily expenditure and to meet his need for

narcotic opium and, later, heroin which was cheaper and more convenient

in smoking.

After living in the village for four years, he went to make

& living in town. For about six years, he either worked as a labourer at various restaurants or as a fruit havker or assisted at a newspapers

stall belonging to Hrs. LIU Chung. He could earn about $20 to $30 daily

which well enabled him to maintain a reasonable living. Eesides, during the period, he was offered with free accommodation at Mr. LIU's premises.

When his distant uncle, lir. KWAN Ho, started a cooked food stall

in Kowloon, the Prisoner was requested to assist at the stall. He vas

given a monthly salary of 3200 in addition to free meals and lodging. He stayed there for several months only and then changed to serve delivery

work at a cooked food stall in Tsimshatsui for another clansman, with $300

per month and free meals and lodging. Having worked there for about three years, he surrendered himself to the temptation of the gambling stalls, working in which he could make a nice income of about $40 daily. Hence, for the recent seven to eight years, he engaged himself with such illegal employment in gambling stalls and occasionally drug divans. During the period, he mainly took his residence at his places of work and associated

with such undesirable characters as gamblers or drug addicts.

Although he could easily get a decent job and earn a reasonable living without any difficulty, he chose to work at the aforesaid illegal organisations simply because of the nice income he could make from the latte:-
