GENERAL INFORMATION
The Prisoner, Chan Hon Tong, was born in his place Po On District, Kwangtung Province, China. He came to Hong Kong in the years between 1949 and 1950. He has a step-mother who is believed to be still living in China though out of contact with him. His other relatives are believed to be deceased.
After he had come to Hong Kong he had tried his hands on a number of manual work. For a short time he was a farm assistant in Yuen Long, N.T. Later he became a delivery hand at general store, then floor polishing worker, watchman and cleaning worker. At the time he was arrested he had a part time job as a cleaning worker at Nos. 56-71, Chung Hom Kok Road for $280 p.m. He worked early in the morning from about 7 to 9:30 a.m. During the day he was cleaning private cars for the residents in the vicinity for supplementary income.
He has a common law wife, Madam Lee Oi Kwan, with whom he has lived since August, 1969. and has a daughter, aged 21⁄2 years living at 2C, Catchick St., 1/F. They pay monthly rental of $70, occupying a middle cubicle for more than 3 years.
There are
5 cubicles and 4 bed spaces in that flat which is shared by 5 households.
He had received only a few years' schooling in China, and had not yet completed primary education. He has possessed no special skills. His total monthly earnings amounts to about $400-$500. Before he was arrested his wife was working as a seam- stress at about $14 p.d. As he was working in early morning he managed to return home later to cook lunch and to take care of his daughter in the afternoon. They had no financial difficulty in keeping the family. He had been leading a steady life since he cohabited with his wife.
