Mr. Mills came down and searched the flat. On opening the

door of the 'hot room', he saw a body lying on the floor. He immediately summoned the police.

The body of the girl was found lying spread-eagled on the floor inside the 'hot room'. There were two kitchen

knives found embedded in the left side of her throat. Two

other bloodstained kitchen knives were found lying close beside the body; the blade of one of these knives was

broken and the blade of the other was bent. Two pieces of the broken knife blade were found still embedded in the

girl's, throat. There were cut and stab wounds found on her scalp and her eyelids were also lacerated with cuts.

Her right arm was underneath her body and her left arm was fully extended. A piece of cord was found loosely tied around both her wrists. Another piece of cord loosely encircled her head and hair. A post mortem examination

revealed that the hyoid bone in her neck was fractured and there were present all the characteristic symptoms of manual strangulation. The pathologist expressed the view that death was due to manual strangulation. He further expressed his opinion that the stab wounds in the throat were inflicted either at the time of death or almost immediately afterwards.

The girl was last seen alive at about 1.30 p.m. amah in an upstairs flat in the same building gave evidence that the deceased had come up to see her at about 1.20 p.m. and brought her something which the amah had asked the deceased to purchase for her. After a short conversation between them the dead girl left and went downstairs. The amah went down about 2 p.m. to try and borrow an iron from the deceased. However, on ringing the door bell, there was no answer. There was evidence that during the course of the afternoon two delivery boys had attempted to deliver meat and groceries to the flat. On receiving no answer when they pressed the door bell they left the goods outside the front door entrance. It would seem reasonably clear, therefore,
