There is little discrimination against women in industry in conditions of employment. Certain legislative measures are in favour of women in some respects for their protection, e.g. statutory limitation of their hours of work and hours of overtime and prohibition of employment in dangerous trades. As regards equal pay for equal work for men and women, any differences are mainly due to the difference in the positions the men and women are holding.
The principle of equal pay for women, as far as their employment by Government is concerned, will be implemented by 1975. This principle also applies to teachers and other personnel employed in schools in receipt of recurrent subsidy from Government and administered under the Code of Aid applicable to such schools. Equal pay is already enjoyed by female medical and dental officers.
The marriage bar in the Hong Kong Civil Service was formally removed on 11th November 1972 and the arrangements for introducing pensionability and other related improved conditions of service for married women came into effect from that date.
With effect from 1st January 1974, all women officers in Government are required to take any casual or vacation leave due to them in the first instance and thereafter they will be granted maternity leave on half pay to cover a total absence from work of 10 weeks, not more than 6 weeks of which may be taken following the birth of the child.
