The section ends with the writers at last revealing their revolutionary zeal for, they say, another reason for Hong Kong remaining what it is, is that there is

"a lack of anything which could be called a national liberation movement in the Colony." There is also, they add, in a much aggrieved tone,

The Folitical Future

The last section begins:

"The British Government's position on the future of Hong kong is that the less said about it the better. The main ingredients of the position are inactivity and silence, though with subtle qualifications.

It goes on to quote extracts from Renmin Pao (The Peoples' Daily) which, considering they were written at the time of the confrontation riots in 1967, are, not surprisingly, very hostile. As the writer recites his selective record of the relationship between the British and Chinese Governments over Hong Kong, China becomes clearly a collaborator in maintaining the "status quo" Conveniently, Hong Kong's value to China both as an export market and as an entrepeneur trading port is played dorn, and the problems which China would take over if Hong long were restored to her at this moment as the writers seem to advocate, are completely ignored. There is no mention, either, of the opinion of the four million pcople of Hong Kong, the so-called "Chinese masses" which are so cruelly" exploited by the "present unjust regime The section ends with a final rhetorical message for the British people. "Io people which so oppresses another can itself be free.

Those who are more familiar with the Asian scene wil1 question the real purpose behind the pamphlet. Who is intended to be the arch villian? Is it the Hong Long Government which is so much criticised? Is it the British Government, which is supposedly responsible for all the ills publicised in the book? Is it meant to create a guilt conscience among the British people? Or is it meant to embarrass China in keeping with current Soviet-inspired propaganda against that country? One might well ask.
