Hong Kong's reserves in London at present total about $2,800 million, on which Hong Kong can draw at any time. Most can be cashed in the same way as a cheque. Cther reserves provide the backing for Hong Kong's stable currency.
All the reserves available for withdrawal would not cover half a year's expenditure at current rates.

In only small political-motivated groups is there any desire for official Chinese representation. Most people accept the reality of the position and see practical difficulties which would be disadvantageous to both Britain and China.
The Chinese Government has not pressed for official representation and the writers probably introduce this topic to embarrass China. Soviet propaganda has sought to do the same over the position of Hong Kong.
