to very large numbers of young men and women in the years ahead.

It is essential that this fact should not be lost sight of, either

by young people contemplating their choice of career or by their

parents, teachers, and others who advise them in their choice.

The Government recognises that its proposals for reductions

in' defence plans will cause some industrial and employment problems

in certain areas and for certain firms. But the changes in our

equipment programme will be made as smoothly as possible and with

the maximum of notice to e able industry to adjust its plans. I

am confident that this should make the problems more manageable;

and I am in close touch with my Rt Hon Friend, the Secretary of

State for Industry, on these aspects of the review.
