UK-based strike, attack, reconnaissance, long-range

maritime patrol and air defence forces for operations in

SACEUR's, SACLANT's and CINCHAN's areas.

The UK air defence organisation includes fighters, Airborne

Early Warning (AEW) aircraft and a chain of radar stations, as an

integral part of SACEUR's air defence system. The UK has recently

offered to place additional UK-based Strike Command combat,

transport and communications aircraft under NATO command in time

of tension or war.

Reinforcement Forces

Since 1968 the UK has made available to NATO the following major

reinforcement forces:

Amphibious Force. The force consists of the Royal Marine

(RM) Commando Brigade, commando ships with their support

helicopter squadrons, assault ships and the necessary

afloat support.

UK Mobile Force (UKF). The land element comprises

3 airportable brigade groups with associated divisional

troop and logistic support. It relies heavily on TAVR

units and reservists. The air element consists of 30

offensive support and 10 short range tactical transport

aircraft, as well as 42 support helicopters. The helicopters

provide tactical mobility to the land element, and the

other aircraft are allocated to the local Allied Tactical

Air Force (ATAF).

Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (AMF). (UK contribution)

The AMF is an immediate-reaction multi-national force,

whose purpose is to deter aggression by demonstrating

NATO solidarity and by assisting in conventional defence if
