HONG KONG DEFENCE AGREEMENT WORKS CONTRIBUTION

Thank you for your letter of the 28 May, addressed to Andrew Stuart.

1.

2. You will remember that you and I had a word on this matter towards the end of last week. I also talked with Lockwood and Thorp at the Ministry of Defence, and with Scholar, at the Treasury. The result was our Telegram No. 494 to Hong Kong, conveying our agreement and saying that we strongly preferred the alternative mentioned in paragraph 2 (c) of their telegram No. 531.

We got our outward telegram off just before the holiday because we understood from the Ministry of Defence that Hong Kong were anxious to have our reply by 27 May.

3. I enclose a further copy of our telegram, in case the original copy failed to reach you.
