APPENDIX III—Contd.

Teacher Training

The three colleges of education are wholly maintained by the government, producing non-graduate teachers qualified to teach in primary schools and lower forms of secondary schools. All three colleges offer full-time two-year courses. Specialist third-year courses in mathematics, art, music and domestic science are offered to prepare non-graduate teachers specializing in these subjects.

Part-time in-service training courses of two-year duration for unqualified teachers are provided at the colleges. They lead to the award of a certificate granting qualified teacher status. The Morrison Hill Technical Institute also operates full-time one-year and two-year courses for the training of technical teachers and workshop instructors.

A one-year full-time post-graduate course in education, leading to a Diploma in Education, is provided by the two Universities. Similar part-time two-year courses leading to a Diploma or Certificate in Education are also offered.

Adult Education

Adult education is provided by the Technical Institute evening departments, the Evening School of Higher Chinese Studies, the Evening Institute, the adult education and recreation centres of the Education Department, the Hong Kong Management Association and similar organizations.

The Evening School of Higher Chinese Studies offers a three-year course in general arts leading to a diploma issued by the Education Department. Subjects taught include Chinese literature, philosophy, sociology and English language and literature.

The Evening Institute offers English courses from elementary to post-certificate level; teachers' classes for art, music, handwork, woodwork, physical education, modern educational dance, modern mathematics and the Teaching of English; and secondary school courses leading to a certificate of education. Literacy classes and general background classes provide fundamental and elementary education with special ref- erence to adult needs and interest. Adults thus have a complete educational ladder from the literacy level to post-secondary studies.

Educational Television

Educational television was introduced for the first time to Primary 3 level in September 1971. The service has been extended to Primary 4 level in 1972. Programmes covering four major subject areas of Chinese language, English language, mathematics and social studies are produced for over 220,000 Primary 3 and 4 pupils. Plans have been made to expand the service so as to include upper Primary and Secondary levels.

Universities

The two Universities in Hong Kong are autonomous bodies supported financially by endowments and grants made through the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee.

The University of Hong Kong has five faculties: Medical, Engineering and Architec- ture, Arts, Science, and Social Science and Law.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is a federal university wih three foundation colleges. It has three faculties: Arts, Science, and Commerce and Social Science.
