PARLIAMENTARY QUESTIONS:

HONG KONG
I submit draft answers to six written PQs on Hong Kong by Mr Ivor Clemitson MP. These questions are clearly derived from "Hong Kong: A Case to Answer", and the answers to them provide a further useful refutation of the booklet's allegations.
2. What was the average wage in 1973 of the indigenous work
force in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong, and in the textile and electronics industries in particular?
Comment The average industrial daily wage of about £2 a day (IK 12 approx. equals £1), compares for example with 200 million people in India with a monthly wage of less than £2.

What was the rate of infant mortality in the Crown Colony
of Hong Kong in the years 1965, 1970 and 1973?
Comment The rate of infant mortality is below that in the
UK where it is about 17 per thousand live births.

What was the percentage of children between the ages of
five years and fifteen years receiving full-time education in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong in the years 1965, 1970 and 1973?
Comment The percentage of children in full time education is impressive, bearing in mind that education after 12 is still not universal in Hong Kong.

What is the ratio of hospital beds available free of charge
to the patient per 1,000 of the population in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong?
Comment - The Hong Kong figure compares with about
9 per thousand in the UK. It exposes the misleading statistic in "A Case to Answer" which records that there are only 238 hospital beds for 665,700 people in the New Territories. The reason for the discrepancy is that most of the hospitals are, for obvious reasons, in the urban areas.
