Mr Ken Marks (Manchester, Gorton): To ask the Secretary of State for Fóreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what percentage of children in Hong Kong are registered as pupils in private and public sector schools, respectively; and how many stay until the age of 16 years.

In September 1973 there were:
(a) 576,890 children enrolled in public primary
schools and 146,689 children enrolled in private primary schools.
(b) 185,162 children enrolled in public and
assisted secondary schools and 159,801 children enrolled in private secondary schools.
Of the primary age group (6 to 11) of 603,200 children, 576,625 or 95.6% are in primary schools, distributed as follows:

There are, however, children in primary age group in kindergarten and secondary schools. Similarly children of secondary school age may be found in primary schools.
Of the secondary age group (12 to 16) of 533,100 children, 255,516 or 47.9% are in secondary schools, distributed as follows:

22.2% 25.7%
Of the 16 year old age group of 101,300 children, there are 56,283 (55.6%) enrolled in schools of all types.
