Re: Miss Fung Fei Fung (Catherine) and
St Catherine's School
In regard to the appeal by the Rev Joyce Bennett to H.E. about the refusal of the Director of Education to grant Miss Fung permission to teach, I have had a further talk with Miss Bennett and she had just been getting more information about Miss Fung's time in China which we think you should take into consideration.
1.
Miss Fung was born in Hong Kong, holds a British H.K. Birth Certificate, and her education was the for the most part in Hong Kong:
a) St Stephen's Kindergarten 4 years before World War II.
b) In Junior High School and educated at home during war
years in H.K.
c) St Stephen's Girls' College, H.K. 1945-51 graduated
with H.K. University entrance.
2. In China her further education was mostly in music. She attended Yenching University, (a foremost Christian University in Peking until its absorption into Tsing Hua and Government universities)
At this time education in China was still international, and Miss Fung's music teachers were French, and also American (Mr Gilkie)
3. She went for further study in Shanghai but was not allowed to complete her course as she was suspected of being too individualist. She was sent to labour in the fields in 1957 as she had not been active enough in opposing rightists following the "Let the Hundred Flowers grow" period.
4. However after a year, that is in 1958, Miss Fung was permitted to teach in Inner Mongolia, in some kind of Normal School. But again she had difficulties because she encouraged music pupils to individual excellence in skill when this was apparently not the official policy.
5. With the coming of the Cultural Revolution Fung Fei Fung was imprisoned, from January 1968 to May 1969. Among other things she was accused of being a British spy.
