(Note For information the free allowance for accom-
panied baggage taken by air is normally 30 kls. economy class or 40 kis. first class for officers travelling Great Britain/Hong Kong; 20 kls. economy class, 30 kls. first class for officers recruited from territories other than Great Britain)
(vii) On first appointment an officer may have personal effects transported free from a warehouse in Hong Kong to his quarters by the Director of Government Supplies or by Departmental transport. He will however be required to repay any loading fees etc., incurred in withdrawing personal effects from a warehouse. The officer is advised therefore to consign his effects c/o The Director of Government Supplies, Hong Kong Government and to ensure that shipping agencies forward Bills of Lading direct to the Director of Government Supplies in advance of the arrival of the vessel carrying his baggage. 13. INSURANCE
In no circumstances does Government meet claims for refund of personal flight insurance charges.
(NOTES: (1) Officers are themselves responsible for the
insurance and shipment of their personal effects. To be comprehensive, insurance should cover their effects when travelling to take up their duties, or when on leave, or when in the territory to which they have been posted, or when their wives travel independently. No liability on the part of the Government or the Crown agents to grant compensation for loss can be admitted and the cost of the insurance cannot be borne by public funds. Most of the leading Insurance Companies and Insurance Brokers are prepared to effect such insurance. Marine War Risk can be insured either through Lloyds Brokers or Insurance Companies.

If officers elect to insure, a specification showing details and value of the articles should be furnished in order to facilitate settle- ment of claims for partial losses. Gold, platinum and silver articules, watches, jewellery, trinkets and furs should be declared separately. It is understood that insurance can be effected within a few days, but officers are advised to make the necessary preliminary enquiries in advance. Short notice of the date of departure is at times unavoidable; but this should not prevent the completion of insurance by an officer who has taken all preliminary action.
As regards the shipment of personal effects, it is advisable for an officer travelling by air to make arrangements for the shipment of unaccompanied baggage with a forwarding agent).
