Conditions of Appointment of Director of Education
Salary
All emoluments are fixed in Hong Kong dollars and are so paid- whilst officers are on service. For purnoses of paying salaries when on leave, dollars are converted into sterling at the Government rate of exchange. For comparison purposes the sterling equivalent shown has been calculated at the rate of $12.50 £1 Sterling which was the rate of exchange as at April 1974. This rate may vary but the current rate can be checked at any bank.
The officer will receive a fixed salary of £14,000 a month (approximately £stg. 13,440 a year)
ACURS AND GRATUITY
This appointment will be on a two-tour linked engagement agreement basis - i.e. an initial tour of 24 years plus leave, renewable for another tour of 24 years (also on agreement) subject to sat- isfactory service and the agreement of the officer.
A gratuity is payable on the satisfactory completion of each tour of service at the rate of twenty-five per cent (25%) of totel basic salary drawn during the tour. The gratuity will be liable to local taxation.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
A memorandum on the general conditions of service in Hong Kong is appended to this paper but it should be regarded as amended as stated below. Furthermore, as this appointment is on agreement all references in that memo to conditions relating solely to appointments on probation/pensionable establishment will not apply.

The officer appointed to this post will not be required to undergo instruction in the Chinese language.
Farographs 10 - Leave and 11 Passages
Instead of the vacation leave mentioned in the enclosed memo the officer appointed to this post may be permitted to take "annual leave" which means that he will be granted air passages for himself and his wife and children (if they accompany him to Hong Kong) to the UK and back to Hong Kong after each year of resident service. with regard to School Fassages, officers on annual leave terms ere credited with two additional passage units for each child up to a maximum of 4 children in the numerical year (i.e. 1974, 1975, ̈etc.) in which annual leave is taken. The officer's leave earning rate in the numerical year in which annual leave is taken will be 45 days ver annuņ. The leave earning rate in years in which annual leave is not taken will remain as stated in the attached memorandum.
