Officers who have been permitted to draw Overseas Education Allowances under E.C. No. 9/64 for the education of their children in day schools which provide approved "lodging" may continue to draw the rates provided under B.C. No. 9/64 subject to:

the allowance not exceeding the fee paid by the officer;

the conditions laid down in E.C. No. 9/64 being satisfied in every other respect.

An officer who wishes to receive a Day School Allowance should apply to the Establishment Secretary by submitting an explana- tory memo through his Head of Department. Payment of any allowances approved will be dealt with on an individual basis.

The conditions of payment of Boarding School and Day School Allowances, other than para. 3(iii) and country of origin as mentiorød

In this regard a local in para. 3(ix), will apply to local officers. :officer is defined as an officer who is habitually resident in Hong Kong, Macau, China or Taiwan and who has his principal family and social ties and general background in these countries.

Allowances are restricted to eligible officers whose children are educated in approved schools at the secondary level in the U.K.

Looal officers who are based in overseas posts such as the Hong Kong Government London Office are eligible to olaim Overseas Education Allowances as above, or to claim boarding school allowances if the children are in a boarding school in Hong Kong, or a Day School Allowance if the children are attending a day school in Hong Kong and their mother or step-mother is not in Hong Kong to look after them. The rates of allowances in respect of boarding schools in Hong Kong and the Day School Allowance for Hong Kong have not yet been determined, but will in due course be notified to the service,

11. and Eligibility for local officers takes effect from the school

An officer joining the service term commencing in September 1972. may claim Education Allowances from the beginning of the school term next after the date of his appointment under E.R. 160.
