(xii) Grants and Scholarships

No deduction will be made from the allowances as a result of any grant paid from an education authority, educational trust or other public or private body, provided that the total assistance received by the officer when taken together with the Government allowances does not exceed the school fees. A scholarship won by a child on a competitive basis will not be taken into account.

(xiii) Accommodation provided on Recommendation of School

Boarding allowances will not be paid in cases where the boarding school authorities merely recommend suitable boarding accommodation for day pupils, which " arrangements are not under the full administration and control of the boarding school authorities, such circumstances the day school allowance may be appropriate subject to the conditions concerning this allowance.

Where the 'basio boarding and tuition fees amount to less than the appropriate boarding school allowances, payment will be restricted to the net amount actually payable by the officer (i.e. after taking account of any grants referred to in sub-para. (xii) above). If school fees are stated or payable in a currency other than sterling, the necessary calculations will be made using the mid- market rate between sterling and the currency concerned on the day on which the officer signed the claim forms.

(xv) Fée - Definition

A fee is the basic boarding and tuition fee as advertised in a school's prospectus.

B. Day School Allowance

Officers may receive a Day School Allowance for children who for special reasons (for example, ill-health' ́or because they are backward) have to attend a school in their country of origin as day pupils provided the mother or step-mother is not in the country to look after the child. If the mother or step-mother of a child is in the country in which the child is being educated it will, subject to any submissions an officer may wish to make, be assumed that she can look after the child and the allowance will not be payable.

The allowance will be at whatever rate is provided from time to time under the 0.S.A.Š. Details of allowances known are shown in Appendix I to this circular. Where necessary details of other countries not included in this Appendix are being obtained and will be notified to the service in due course. Payment will be retrospective to the beginning of the term next after 1st April 1971.
