Education Facilities for English-speaking Children

There are no government kindergarten schools but there are several schools in Hong Kong which provide education for English-speaking children of the 3-5 years age group.

Some of these schools or nurseries consist of only one class and are run by the wives of European residents.

PRIMARY EDUCATION

The following government junior English schools provide education for English-speaking children aged 5 to 11 years :-

1. Kowloon Junior School, Perth Street, Kowloon.

Quarry Bay School, Quarry Bay, North Point, Hong Kong.

2.

3.

The Peak School, The Peak, Hong Kong.

4.

Glenealy Junior School, 1, Hornsey Road, Hong Kong.

5. Kennedy Road Junior School, 26, Kennedy Road, Hong Kong.

None

These are co-educational day schools and the education provided is similar in content and method to that available in state schools in Britain. of them provides facilities of the type available in British 'preparatory' or 'public schools' and children are not prepared directly for the Common Entrance Examination. Pupils must be entered privately for the Common Entrance Examination although arrangements are made for children to sit the examination at the Peak School.

There is a heavy demand for places in all five schools and an unavoid- able waiting period for admission may be experienced. Parents are therefore strongly advised to make application for admission as soon as possible and preferably well in advance of their arrival in Hong Kong.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

There is only one government secondary school which provides for English-speaking children. This is King George V school, Tin Kwong Road, Kowloon, which is a co-educational day school catering for children of the 11-16 age group. It is a comprehensive school from the point of view of the academic ability of its pupils.

Classes in the school follow syllabuses leading either to the Certi- ficate of Secondary Education Examination or the London G.C.E. 'O' level Examination in Form 5 and, for the more able candidates to the 'A' level Examination in Form Upper 6.

With regard to language teaching French is taught up to Certificate of Secondary Education Level and General Certificate of Education '0' and 'A' Level. German is an optional G.C.E. subject for the more able pupils in Form 3 and Form 4.

Pupils of approximately 17 nationalities are enrolled in King George V
