3 October 1974

Dear Mr Carr

I have had a chance to discuss your projects with my colleagues and to read the literature. I think there is a great deal of merit in all that you say.

However,

I see no reason to change what I said to you and Dr Blacklock, that the only way to change centuries of musical tradition is to approach the educational market with a carefully validated research project.

I would think that your next best step is to approach musical educational authorities and the Council for Educational Technology, or even the Association for Programme Learning and Educational Technology and try to set up a research project.

The omitted para is not a direct

public interest mutter at the moment.

:

There have been a large number of proposals for using colour in musical notation over the years and all of them ultimately fall down because of the enormous task and organisation that is necessary to print what amounts to all music in colour. There is no point in starting students with colour and then, in effect, leaving them in the lurch for lack of colour continuation pieces.

I should like to keep in touch with you from time to time because of your interest in presenting Jazz music.

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely
