Foreign Secretary,

Foreign & Commonwealth Office,

Whitehall,

28th JUNE 1974

Dear Mr. Callaghan,

(141) √(157)

I am writing to you on behalf of the Animal Welfare Trust and to draw your attention to the front page report headed "Dogs for dinner" which appeared on 23rd June in the 'Sunday People'. Our Trust is most concerned that dog eating and slaughtering in such inhumane conditions is carried out in territory for which you have ultimate responsibility.

We have no wish to trespass on your time, but we would be grateful for your comments on the situation as it is at the moment and on whether you intend to institute action to prevent this illegal trade.

The Trust is considering launching an appeal to raise money to pay for inspectors to live and work in Hong Kong. May we know how this would be welcomed Officially?

Out of courtesy we feel you should be informed that we shall make representations to the Governor of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Chief of Police, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Chairman of the Peoples' Republic of China and various other organisations and individuals to let them know of our disquiet and to find out their views.

The manner in which the dogs are killed, Mr. Callaghan, is evil and that they are slaughtered in Hong Kong is a smear on Britain's conscience. This trade must be ended.

Yours sincerely,

Lielvay thist
