We have now looked into the question of the Felis bengalensis bengalensis to which Timothy George referred in paragraph 6 of his letter of 23 May. Our experts have advised that, while the sub-species Felis bengalensis bengalensis i. protected under the Convention, the species itself (Felis bengalensis) is not. Moreover, the animals imported into Hong Kong belong to a different sub-species known as Felis bengalensis chinensis and they are not protected under the Convention. In the period April to June 1974, 150 such animals were imported into Hong Kong.

Our latest returns from the trade show that two identifiable species on the protected list of the International Convention continued to be imported into Hong Kong from China in the period April to June 1974. They were 941
Chinese Pangolins (Manis pentadactyla) and 165 Pythons (Python molurus bivittatus). Could you try to ascertain whether they need to be protected in China?

In view of paragraph 9 of your letter to Tim George we must leave it to you how far to press, but we shall be grateful for anything you can achieve.
