Importation of Chinese Wildlife into
Hong Kong
Orr kindly copied to George a copy of his letter to you of 8th March 1974.
2.
We are collecting information of the number of threatened species which appear in the shops in Hong Kong and this will be collated quarterly; we will pass it on, when available.
3.
The discrepancy referred to in paragraph 4 of Orr's letter arises from the fact that the Convention states under Article I that "specimen" means "any animal
whether dead or alive (and) any readily recognizable part of derivation thereof................、 " while the provisions of the Hong Kong Animals and Birds (Restriction of Importation and Possession) Ordinance relate only to live animals or birds. The reference to a possible ban on the import of skins in Hong Kong Telegram No. 86 to FCO paragraph 4 is thus in relation to the Hong Kong legislation which will have to be extended if it is to include skins and parts.
