Iain Orr called today and we discussed briefly his letter 7/3 of 1 June, I understand that you are now the animal specialist in the Embassy.

We should be very glad if you could make a specific enquiry of the Chinese Government about the need to protect the Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias (Megalobatrachus) Davidianus Davidianus. This approach should of course be in the terms of the Ambassador's discussion with WANG Tung on 5 March, and not in the context of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
