HONG KONG.
1. In letter of 2 August we reported that meeting of interested departments and industries concerned was to be held in mid-August. to discuss working of GPS. Commercial Counsellor was lunching with MFA officials on 15 August when subject of GPS came up. Senior customs official, Bädum, told Commercial Counsellor, without being aware of his interest in the subject, that meeting mentioned above had taken place and to the surprise of the officials present the footwear manufacturers and trade union had raised no objection to the Commission's proposals for footwear. In discussion after meeting Pontoppidan is reported to have said that there was now no need to consult Ministers. He was apparently persuaded however to withhold sending instructions to Brussels for 14 days in case there were any second thoughts.
