MR PETER HORDERN'S F OF 15 July: HONG KONG'S TEXTILE EXPORTS

TO THE COMMUNITY

We discussed the draft reply contained in my minute of 4 July, and agreed that in the interests of brevity the reference to the generalised preference scheme should be dropped, and left for a supplementary answer. The reply would therefore read:

Mr Peter Hordern (Horsham and Crawley) to ask the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement about the export of textiles from Hong Kong into the European Communities.

Draft reply

The European Community takes nearly 40% of Hong Kong's

textile exports. In Community discussions on access

arrangements for textiles from the developing countries including Hong Kong, the United Kingdom is seeking

liberal terms which have full regard to the objectives

of the Multifibre Textile Agreement.

Enclosed in this folder are six copies of notes for supplementaries and of a background note for much of which I am indebted to CRE 1 and CT division, Department of Industry.
