Turning to the last sentence of your paragraph 4, we accept that this applies particularly to liong Kong. Not only is the Information team small, it has to deal with media fairly neatly divided up the middle by language; it follows that the Information Officer tends to specialise in dealings with the English language sections of the media and the Information Assistant with the Chinese. The latter is extensive, especially the press, and as much respon- sibility as practicable is delegated to the Information Assistant, Hr Wu, to help him in his dealings with Chinese journalists. But because the team is small, I would stress our need for a 'floater' for the period December to March, when Coombe is on leave, already referred to in my Administration Officer's letter 93/14 of 11 July to Personnel Operations Department.
I am particularly glad that Mr Wu has been selected for the three week course for locally engaged Information Officers to be held this October. I hope that the Information Officer, Donald Coombe, will also be able to attend a course for Information Officers while he is on leave. I understand that he received only a few days training before taking up his post in January 1973 and I am pleased to note that Donald Kerr, to whom I am copying this letter, has reserved a place for him on the course provisionally due to be held in January.
There is no reference to IRO's work in the report. Miss Kathleen Draycott, the UK Regional Information Officer, reports separately on this.
