Of the metals available we consider the following should be
eliminated for the reasons stated:-
Metal
Pure Nickel
Aluminium
Bronze
Zinc
Sandwich materials
Reasons
Expensive, and in consequence a possibility that
in time the metal value may exceed the face value.
(i) Only suitable for lowest denominations, and
even then likely to be easy to counterfeit. (ii) Light weight of coins may make them unaccept-
able and may reflect on the integrity of the
coinage.
Colour distinction compared with nickel brass
not sufficient to out-weigh additional cost.
Similar to cupro-nickel in colour and although
cheaper is less durable and rapidly becomes dull
grey in use.
(i) Inexpensive but subject to discolouring and
corrosion (particularly in humid climates)
and hence may have a shorter life. (ii) Scrap value on withdrawal from circulation
generally very low.

The metals currently in use, namely nickel brass and cupro- nickel are accepted by the general public; they wear well and maintain a reasonable appearance and we consider that they should continue to be used. However, as we are recommending the introduction of additional denominations as well as reviewing the sizes of the present range, we consider that the opportunity should be taken to introduce uniformity in the metal content of the cent and dollar denominations. Accordingly, we recommend that the 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins be made of nickel brass and the $1, $2 and $5 coins of cupro-nickel.
