* Inevitably the use of 5 and 10 cent coins will, in time, gradually decrease and it seems likely that the significance of the former in the currency system will eventually be no greater than is the

1 cent unit today. In consequence, we propose that no change

should be made to the present size of these two coins, but that eventually consideration should be given to reducing the size of the 10 cent coin to 17.50 millimetres.

comments.

These proposals were submitted to the Royal Mint for their

They replied as follows:

"We have studied the proposed approach to your coinage problems, and we feel that this represents a rational approach to both short-term and long term action.

The new range of diameters selected for the revised

series of denominations gives an acceptable structure both in terms of distinguishing between denominations in the new range, and also in terms of meeting the problems which exist in the period during which there is some overlap between the old series and the new. The diameter and shape chosen for the new 20 cent and 2 dollar values fit readily into the general pattern of recommendations made by us and we would

see no problems in the introduction of those values.

We have noted your intention not to change the 5 and 10 cents coins and we would be glad to give further advice if necessary at the point in time when you decide to re-examine this question. We would regard a diameter of 17.5 mm for a 10 cent

coin as being entirely suitable provided that there is some reasonable lapse of time between demonetisation

of the 5 cent and the introduction of the new 10 cent

piece. Otherwise a diameter difference of only one millimetre could cause some degree of confusion."

Choice of Metals

55.

The choice of metals has aroused considerable interest amongst organisations specializing in this field and we have received several publications (see list at Appendix 5) and specimen coin blanks. Coinage metals and the advantages and disadvantages relating to each have been reviewed in some detail in paragraphs 11 - 14 of the Royal Mint paper.
