In the light of the comments contained in the Royal Mint

paper and local considerations, particularly the shortage of secure

storage space, we have concluded that it would be impracticable simultaneously to introduce coins of new denominations and replace

the existing coins with new ones but of a different size, However,

we are also of the view that some of the existing coins are heavier

and larger than necessary and we consider that the long term aim

should be to bring about a reduction in the size and weight of existing

coins but particularly the dollar and 50 cent pieces. We consider

that the introduction of 20 cent and $2 pieces would effectively

reduce the number of 10 cent and $1 coins which would otherwise be

in circulation. However, this presents a problem with regard to the

size and shape of these two additional denominations in relation to

the existing coins which will for some time circulate together, and

we have concluded that the best way to overcome this problem would be

to introduce shaped $2 and 20 cent coins which would provide the

necessary distinguishability and fit in with the long term aims. This

means that it is necessary to set the specifications for the full new

range of coins at the same time as the designs for the $2 and 20 cent

pieces are determined. Our recommendations are summarised below:
