would cause problems with coin-operated machines. We have, therefore, considered not only the sizes of the additional coins we propose but also adjustments to the sizes of the existing coins so as to provide

a range of coins which we believe would best meet Hong Kong's needs.

44.

Having given due consideration to the recommendations presented to us (see below, paragraph 53), we formed the opinion that, even with eventual adjustments to the sizes of existing coins, it would be necessary to introduce one or more shaped coins. However, we were concerned as to public reaction, from a community used solely to round coins, to such a proposal. A progress report on the Committee's

deliberations was therefore released to the press in the middle of

February. The report, which gave prominence to the possible introduction

of shaped coins, appeared in at least one English and several Chinese

newspapers. Two papers also reproduced photographs of likely shapes. In order to ascertain a more accurate reflection of public opinion, we requested the Director of Home Affairs and the Secretary for the New

Territories to advise us on the possible public reaction to the introduction of shaped coins. The Director of Home Affairs reported

that the City District Officers had made discreet enquiries and that

many of their contacts felt that shaped coins would be necessary to avoid confusion if new coins were to be added to the existing range.

He also reported that a four sided coin with rounded corners was much

favoured. The Secretary for the New Territories advised that neither

the Heung Yee Kuk nor the New Territories General Chamber of Commerce had reacted unfavourably to the Committee's proposal.

45.

Coin-operated machines are a further factor to be considered

in deciding upon size and shape. At the present time there are relatively few coin-operated machines in Hong Kong. Such machines are parking meters, weighing machines, ferry turnstiles, fare collection equipment, telephones, telescopes, stamp vending-machines and food and drink

vending machines.

Parking meters are by far the most numerous.
