PS/Lord Goronwy-Roberts
VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG
1.
Sir Murray MacLehose's mother is still on the brink of death but has some faint chance of surviving. Sir Murray has concluded that, if this is acceptable to Hong Kong and to us, he ought to stay until 10 August, either for the funeral or to arrange an extended convalescence. I have sent a telegram to Homg Kong asking if they agree. I have told Sir Murray there is no objection from this end. The extra leave would be deducted from or in place of his planned leave in the autumn.
2.
Sir Murray has suggested that he should come and see Lord Goronwy-Roberts separately about the question of illegal immigration, rather than stopping over on his way back to Hong Kong. He proposed that, unless his mother's affairs reach a crisis, he should fly to London from Glasgow for the purpose on Thursday or Friday of this week. You have reserved a slot for a meeting between the Governor and Lord Goronwy-Roberts in the House of Lords on Thursday 25 July at 3.15 p.m. I will confirm this with Sir Murray this afternoon.
