SPONSORED VISITS OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO HONG KONG

1.

As the Minister already knows, Mr James Johnson MP and

Mr Ben Ford MP and My Ken Park HP are to visit Hong Kong during

23

the Easter recess (13-33 April) as guests of the Hong Kong

Government.

Lord Goronwy-Roberts has agreed that the Department

might give the prospective visitors any necessary briefing on

Hong Kong before they leave. He has said that he would like to

see them on their return. We will suggest this to Mr Johnson.

I attach the latest version (March 1974) of a standard background

political brief which I would propose to give to the Members of

Parliament. Perhaps you could confirm that Lord Goronwy-Roberts

approves the brief.

3.

The Members of Parliament may also find it useful to

have a copy of the Governor's latest policy speech, and I would

propose to give them the text of Sir Murray MacLehose's speech at

the opening of the Legislative Council in October 1973. We would

also provide a brief list of leading personalities in Hong Kong.
