Mr Eric Deakins, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Trade), hopes to visit Hong Kong from 28 to 30 March 1975; the visit would be sandwiched between a trip to China (mainly for the opening of the Machine Tools and Scientific Instruments Exhibition in Shanghai) and a tour of Mexico. Detailed arrangements for China and Mexico still have to be firmed up, but the present intention is that Ar Deakins should leave China by rail from Cantor, arriving at the Hong Kong border at 10.15am on Friday 29 March; and fly from Hong Kong to Mexico, departing at either 14.30 or 21.05 on Sunday 30 March.
The timing of the Hong Kong visit is, of course, less then ideal, in that it falls squarely over the Easter weekend. But we hope you and the Governor will agree that it would nevertheless he desirable for Mr Deakins to put in an appearance, even though the scope for business engagements at such a time would cbviously be limited.
we should be grateful if you would mention the proposed visit to the Governor when he returns to Hong Kong at the beginning of the New Year; if you both agree that it should take place perhaps you would let us have your suggestions for a possible programme.
