Thank you for your confidential and personal

I have telegraphed my

letter dated kt November 1974. comments but you may also find the attached booklet dated July 1974 of some use.

2.

As indicated in the telegram, we have had some difficulty about giving you any useful information on Mr. McNally's second point.

3.

As we do not know the Gross National Product

of Hong Kong, we cannot compare it with that of neighbouring countries.

4.

The Senior Economist here guesses that we would probably not show up well in such a comparison for several reasons, e.g. our rapid development, smaller government involvement in utilities, low tax structure and the compact size of the territory.

5.

I wonder if you could get hold of any information on the G.N.P. of South-east Asian countries? It may be worthwhile trying through our embassies. We should then have something to measure our G.N.P. against when we eventually are able to assess it.

6.

As to trade union organisations, the situation is generally as described in David Lai's letter of 4th September 1973 in CR 3/3041/56 II your ref: 5/16. However, I will have that letter updated and sent to you.
