Officers' Association opposes Hong Kong flag plan

;

The ITF-affiliated Merchant Navy and Airline Officers' Association has protested in the strongest possible terms to the British Department of Trade and Industry at proposals being discussed between the government and shipping representatives from Hong Kong that Hong Kong should be allowed to become a separate port of registry and that arrangements should be made which woulà permit various dispensations from UK standards for safety equipment, crew accommodation, manning requirements, etc. At present Hong Kong registry is subject to British regulations identical to those applied to UK registration.

The MNAOA considers that such a move would be tantamount to establishing a flag of convenience registry in Hong Kong.
