(iii) Persons to whom the Hong Kong Certificates at

2nd late or 2nd Engineer levels have been issued

under (ii) will be eligible to sit for and be

issued with Hong Kong Certificates at 1st Mate

and 1st Engineer (Chief Engineer) levels after

they have given satisfactory service in Hong Kong

registered ships for a period not less than that

required for the normal class of candidate between

the 2nd and 1st Class Certificate examinations.

The Hong Kong Government may arrange for examinations

for Hong Kong Certificates at 2nd Mate and 2nd Engineer

levels to be taken in the Chinese language but the

Director of Marine must satisfy himself that these

are to the same standards as the examinations taken

in English. In such a case the candidates would

also have to pass an oral test in English.

There shall be no modifications permitted in relation to

requirements at Master level.

Safety equipment standards

The Hong Kong Government shall apply the same standards. as the UK

in respect of safety equipment. The UK will however, by mutual

agreement, delegate more functions to the Director of Marine to

approve safety equipment subject to relevant information being passed

by him between the two Governments and to the application/of testing pro-

cedures similar to those used by the UK.

Crew accommodation standards

The Hong Kong Government shall apply UK standards in relation to

crew accommodation but the Director of Marine would be authorised

to approve materials for that purpose after subjecting them to testing

procedures similar to those used in the UK.
